It is nice to go to an animation event and only be 30 minutes from home. Most times I`m on the road for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. It is always nice to see Sol and Martha no matter how long the drive. These are some of the reasons that I really enjoyed myself at the Fashion Island Chuck Jones Gallery Opening.

Bugs Bunny was also in attendance and Sol asked him if he know were he got his name from and then preceded to tell him the Bugs Hardaway story. Go Sol !!!

A number of the Jones family were in attendance. Rob Minkoff of Lion King fame dropped in. Animated-News reporter Christian Ziebarth showed up claiming that he found out about the event from the ASIFA blog. (Only fair, I check his site daily looking for stories to steal)

Digiview: Cartoon Craze No. 19
Porky Pig: Porky`s Cafe`

These are licensed cartoons not public domain. There is a better care taken with the quality of the films. Most of the cartoons are Looney Tunes in glorious original black and white. No muddy 1972 slap dab color job here folks, thank you very much.

It is so great to have good copies in black and white finally. I have good copies for the bad color and bad copies of the good black and white. . . You get the picture. $1 at WalMart

1. Porky`s Cafe`: B/W title toon, is a good clean transfer of a good print. Chuck Jones at his best. Loved the ant in the pan cake stick.

2. Porky`s Prize Pony: B/W has a good transfer from a clean print. Another Chuck Jones. Story okay but not his best. Enjoyable.

3. Ali-Baba Bound: B/W a Bob Clampett Porky cartoon. Minor screen noise and a small projector line. Current events have conspired to make the suicide bomber unfunny.

4. Confusions of a Nutzy Spy: B/W print is a little muddy, minor screen noise. Norm McCabe refreshing take on toons a little different from what we think of as Looney Tunes.

5. Pigs in Polka: COLOR (Merrie Melodies) Friz Freleng at his best. A telling of the 3 little pigs to classical music. Very clean transfer of a pristine print.

6. Joe Glow the Firefly: B/W Chuck Jones. Minor screen noise. Not the best story line.

7. Notes to You: B/W Minor scratches, Friz Freleng, not my favorite story line.

8. Gay Gaucho: B/W Van Beuren. Cleanest I have ever seen this cartoon and I have a number of copies on VHS and DVD. Great 30`s movement. The shocking see through skirt is a furries` dream.

9. The Booze Hangs High: B/W Harman Ising Bosko. Super clean transfer from a clean print. Minor projector line left middle. Opening and End titles intact. 30`s movement. Jazz age booze humor on a farm with drunk pigs. Lots of music and dancing.

  A Screening for ASIFA-HOLLYWOOD members

This is so cool. I have been waiting for this a very long time. I love the work of Diana Wynne Jones and Miyazaki is the god of animation. I have already phoned in my RSVP before posting this, I love you guys but I`m not taking a chance on missing this one.

Sophie (voiced by Emily Mortimer), an average teenage girl working in a hat
shop, finds her life thrown into turmoil when she is literally swept off her feet by a handsome-but-mysterious wizard named Howl (voiced by Christian Bale), and is subsequently turned into a 90-year-old woman (voiced by Jean Simmons) by the vain and conniving Wicked Witch of the Waste (voiced by Lauren Bacall).

Embarking on an incredible odyssey to lift the curse, she finds refuge in Howl's magical moving castle where she becomes acquainted with Markl, Howl's apprentice, and a hot-headed fire demon named Calcifer (voiced by Billy Crystal). Sophie's love and support comes to have a major impact on Howl, who flies in the face of orders from the palace to become a pawn of war and instead
risks his life to help bring peace to the kingdom.

Based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones, this is he latest masterpiece by anime legend Hayao Miyazaki (SPIRITED AWAY). Do not miss this exclusive ASIFA HOLLYWOOD member screening!

  2-D Expo Postponed
It is sad to say but due to circumstances beyond our control (Jerry Beck`s move of residence and his busy work load doing what he does to make a living just cut into his planning time too much to get everything together in time) the 2-D Expo has had to be pushed back to the Fall. Updates as we get new scheduling information.

  Wednesday Roundup
ASIFA-Hollywood Board meeting tonight, open to the public. No pizza guys that is for volunteers but lots of stuff about how ASIFA works and what we are working on.

Tom and Pat Sito are off to Japan and China today as the guests of animation festivals. Enjoy the great wall and the Gbibli Museum maybe I will be able to talk you into reporting on the animation parts of your trip when you get back?

Before I let Tom Sito run off to foreign parts I talked him into doing a design for the Animation Rescue Team T-shirt that I am trying to get made. Will be showing the design at the board meeting tonight.

This weekend is Martha Sigall and Bill Melendez at the Chuck Jones Gallery (see article below)

Next Thursday night is the Dick Huemer retrospective at the Glendale Library (also article below)

I haven`t been able to work on my animation for a week and a half and I am getting a little crazed about getting back to it. Got a dream fantasy dance thing with the Skipper Doll coming up. Lots of dancing and magic movement. Looking forward to it. Maybe Thursday, no that is Dick Huemer, maybe in the morning?

Off to teach a class.

Jason Jones is a film student, a lover of animation, and one of the hardest working volunteers at ASIFA-Hollywood.

He is not flashy. He never makes a big deal out of his work or calls attention to the things he does, he just pitches in and does what needs to be done.

After a volunteer meeting he will clean up the animation center, bagging up pizza stained plates and empty water and cola containers.

He will step out and buy ice went he sees that we need it. And when Tom Sito and I are looking for reasons to get out of the hot sun and move down to the cooler parts of the archive move, Jason just keeps working away like a well oiled machine.

Jason Jones is always there to help out, to run the door, to do what needs to be done without being asked. He is June`s Volunteer of the Month. You may not make a big deal about abut what you do but some of us see your work and it is a big deal. You are the type of person that makes ASFIA work. Thank you! Thank you!

Animal Farm, Britain`s first animated feature, is now available at Walmart for $1.

It is good to have this film available but the quality of the film this was taken from is poor, washed out, faded.

Still, it is only a dollar and I have paid more for poorer quality videos. And it is not unwatchable, it is just not as good as I would hope.

I am spoiled. I am use to seeing animation movies with animation fan and professionals who have a deep love and respect for film and animation, people who have common courtesy in a movie theater.

I almost enjoyed Madagascar, if it wasn`t for the talking cretins on all sides of me and the monster kid next to me. It is a shame, because what I saw of the film looked very good.

I would have liked to have seen more but the kid two seats down from me stood up on his seat about half through the movie and instantly fell between the cushion and the chair back and became trapped and his parents had to do a major jaws of life rescue on his screaming butt.

This is no way to watch a movie. And if this is the way the rest of America sees animated film it is a wonder that any animated movie has a chance of being enjoyed and doing well at the box-office.

Here is hoping that Madagascar gets an Annie nomination so I can see a screening of it with real people and enjoy it the way it was meant to be seen.

Jon, thank you very much for the free ticket. It was a very kind gesture on your part but I really think that the gods were out to get me on this one.
