ABOUT THE GUESTS

Eddie Fitzgerald is a renaissance man among cartoonists. He is an animation director, story artist, philosopher, historian and all around great guy. On his blog, Uncle Eddie's Theory Corner, he has discussed everything from poetry, ballet, philosophy and music to Mad magazine, the unique shapes of ears, vintage men's magazines, Italian insult gestures and how to make the perfect hamburger. Eddie is most famous for his "Fum-Eddies", comic strips made from photos he creates on the iSight camera of his Macintosh. In his Fum-Eddies, he has travelled around the world, back in time to the old West, through the magic of dreams to Neverland and even via rocket into the deepest reaches of outer space! If you haven't bookmarked his blog yet, do so. You'll be glad you did.

Skip Heller is a multi-talented composer, arranger and musician who has worked in a diversity of styles, from punk rock to orchestral music to jazz to old time country. He is a wellspring of information on the history of music and the people who play it, and shares his encyclopedic knowledge daily on his blog at SkipHeller.com.

Danny Young: A very sympathetic person once told me, "You have the perfect body for podcasting." And while I don't like to boast, the seat of my chair has almost completely taken on the shape of me. I'm always cruising the internets for savvy cartoon info and I'm ecstatic to be here co-hosting the fruits of my labor with you, and sharing in the wealth of animation knowledge there is to find. I sincerely hope that we all can become better artists because of it.

Michael Woodside: I'm a relatively new Californian, having recently moved from Central Florida. After volunteering at the ASIFA-Hollywood Archive, I realized pretty quickly that I basically knew a fraction of what was to be known about the world of animation. This podcast is a means for me to uncover these topics and to share them with people like you. So stick around, because we are gonna un-dumb ourselves at an alarming rate!

Stephen Worth is the Director of the ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive. He's a well known expert on vintage animation art with over 20 years of experience as a Producer for Bagdasarian Productions, Ralph Bakshi and John Kricfalusi's Spumco. He is the recipient of three Annie Awards, including the June Foray Award for significant and benevolent impact on the art of animation.

About The Secret of Kells

Magic, fantasy and Celtic mythology come together in a riot of color and detail that dazzle the eyes in this sweeping story about the power of imagination and faith to carry humanity through dark times. Young Brendan lives in the Abbey of Kells, a remote medieval outpost under siege from raiding barbarians. One day a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands, carrying an ancient--but unfinished--book, brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the faerie Aisling, a mysterious young wolf/girl, who helps him along the way. But with the barbarian hordes closing in, will Brendan's determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness and show that enlightenment is the best fortification against barbarians?

About The Secret of Kells

Magic, fantasy and Celtic mythology come together in a riot of color and detail that dazzle the eyes in this sweeping story about the power of imagination and faith to carry humanity through dark times. Shane Acker won a Student Academy Award for his original short film "9." He now directs the animated fantasy epic feature 9, produced by directors Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov. When #9 (voiced by Elijah Wood) first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a community of other small beings like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the landscape intent on doing them harm. Despite being the neophyte of the group, #9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are ever to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they'll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.

A Focus Features presentation in association with Relativity Media of a Jim Lemley/Tim Burton/Timur Bekmambetov production, 9's voice cast includes Elijah Wood, John C. Winsor McCay Award Recipients Announced: Career Achievement and Animation's Highest Honor

BURBANK, Calif. (November 10, 2009) The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood has announced the Winsor McCay Award recipients for 2009: Tim Burton, Bruce Timm and Jeffrey Katzenberg (see bios below). Award recipients will claim their trophies at the 37th Annual Annie Awards scheduled for Saturday, February 6, 2010 at UCLA's Royce Hall in Los Angeles, California.

Named in honor of animator Winsor McCay, best known as a prolific artist and pioneer in the art of comic strips and animation, the Winsor McCay Award stands as one of the highest honors given to an individual in the animation industry in recognition for career contributions to the art of animation. "ASIFA-Hollywood will proudly present Tim Burton, Bruce Timm and Jeffrey Katzenberg each with a Winsor McCay Award," said ASIFA-Hollywood President Antran Manoogian. "The career achievements and outstanding contributions of these talented artisans are most worthy of animation's highest honor."

The Winsor McCay Award may be awarded to a maximum of three individuals in recognition of lifetime or career contributions to the art of animation in producing, directing, animating, design, writing, voice acting, sound and sound effects, technical work, music, professional teaching, or for other endeavors which exhibit outstanding contributions to excellence in animation.

Tim Burton, though mainly known for his innovative live action features, has had a strong influence on the world of animation. Burton began his career as an animator (Tron, Fox And the Hound) at the Walt Disney Studios where made his first independent shorts, Vincent (in stop motion animation) and Frankenweenie (live action). He went on to co-produce Family Dog (1987), an animated pilot for Steven Spielberg, which became a prime time series for CBS in 1993. His stop-motion Halloween feature, Nightmare Before Christmas (1993, directed by Henry Selick) has become a worldwide cult classic. His interest in animation led him to co-produce the stop-mo feature James and The Giant Peach (1996) and this year's CG production, 9. Most recently Burton co-directed the stop-motion Corpse Bride (2005) and his internet animation series, The World of Stainboy (2000). Burton is currently remaking Frankenweenie as a full length animated feature.

Bruce Timm forever changed the world of TV adventure cartoons with his visual take on DC Comics super heroes, beginning with his co-producing Batman: the Animated Series in 1992. Timm began his career in animation at Filmation, doing layouts on He-Man and Flash Gordon. He did storyboards for Ralph Bakshi (on Mighty Mouse: the New Adventures) and John Kricfalusi (Beany & Cecil). While working on Tiny Toon Adventures, he teamed with Eric Rodamski to pitch a new take on Batman. The success of that series has led Timm to redesign the entire DC Comics universe in various Warner Bros. Animation series as Superman, Batman Beyond and Justice League Unlimited. He has drawn several graphic novels and comics stories for DC Comics and is currently producing a series of direct-to video animated features for Warner Home Video.

Jeffrey Katzenberg is the CEO of Dreamworks Animation. Katzenberg was responsible for reviving the fortunes of Walt Disney Feature Animation with his supervision of The Little Mermaid, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Beauty and The Beast and The Lion King. Katzenberg left Disney in 1994 to team with Steven Spielberg and David Geffen to create Dreamworks SKG, where, as head of the animation studio, he oversaw the production of hand drawn animated features The Prince of Egypt, The Road to El Dorado and Spirit. Switching to CG production, the studio produced a string of hits including Shrek (and its sequels), Madagascar (and its spin-offs), Kung Fu Panda, Antz, Bee Movie and Shark Tale.

ASIFA-Hollywood is the largest of an international network of chapters and supports a range of animation initiatives through its membership. Current projects include an animation archive, library and museum, classes and screenings, and animated film preservation efforts.

FANTASTIC MR. FOX is visionary director Wes Anderson's first animated film, utilizing classic handmade stop-motion techniques to tell the story of the best-selling children's book by Roald Dahl (author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach). The film features the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Wally Wolodarsky, Eric Anderson, Michael Gambon, Willem Dafoe, Owen Wilson, and Jarvis Cocker.

Mr. and Mrs. Fox (Clooney and Streep) live an idyllic home life with their son Ash (Schwartzman) and visiting young nephew Kristofferson (Eric Anderson). But after twelve years of quiet domesticity, the bucolic existence proves too much for Mr. Fox's wild animal instincts. Soon he slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief and in doing so, endangers not only his beloved family, but the whole animal community. Trapped underground without enough food to go around, the animals band together to fight against the evil Farmers - Boggis, Bunce and Bean - who are determined to capture the audacious, fantastic Mr. Fox at any cost. In the end, he uses his natural instincts to save his family and friends.

Twentieth Century Fox presents, in association with Indian Paintbrush and Regency Enterprises, an American Empirical Picture, FANTASTIC MR. FOX. Directed by Wes Anderson and written for the screen by Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach, the film is based on the book by Roald Dahl. The film is produced by Allison Abbate, Scott Rudin, Wes Anderson and Jeremy Dawson with Steven Rales and Arnon Milchan as executive producers.
