ASIFA-Hollywood at San Diego Comic-Con 2020 ‘Comic-Con@Home’

The debut of Comic-Con@Home 2020 premiers this week and ASIFA-Hollywood will be there! Due to health concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic, this will be a very different year for the annual celebration. San Diego Comic-Con is giving everyone free access to all the panels and other events …all from the comfort of home.

We will be presenting two panels that you won’t want to miss! From masters of illustration who created some of your favorite movie posters to movers and shakers in animation, we’ll keep you entertained with lively conversations!

The State of the Industry: Animation Superstars, Thursday, 07/23/20, 5:00 PM
ASIFA-Hollywood and some of the brightest talents in animation will assemble for a lively discussion about the inner workings of the animation biz! Moderator David Derks (vice president of ASIFA-Hollywood), Jorge Gutierrez (The Book of Life), Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse), Brooke Keesling (head of animation talent development at Bento Box), Mike Hollingsworth (BoJack Horseman), and Alonso Ramirez Ramos (Disney Mickey Mouse).

Masters of the Illustrated Film Poster, Sunday, 07/26/20, 3:00 PM
The history of the illustrated movie poster can be tied into the history of art itself, the panelists have expressed that they have ‘learned from the masters’ and that ‘we all stand on the shoulders of giants’.  This year we welcome artist Paul Shipper (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) as host to the ASIFA Hollywood panel featuring artists Steve Chorney (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Who Framed Roger Rabbit), James Goodridge (Deadpool, Alita Battle Angel), Greg Hildebrandt (Star Wars), Rory Kurtz (The Graduate, Baby Driver), Robert Rodriguez (The Jewel of the Nile, City Slickers II), Akiko Stehrenberger (Girl on Fire, The Last Black Man in San Francisco), William Stout (Wizards, High School Rock) and Drew Struzan (Hook, Back to the Future).

On Wednesday, July 22, San Diego Comic-Con will open an interactive online exhibit hall at www.comic-con.org. To begin exploring the virtual floor, move your cursor over a booth or table on the Comic-Con@Home online map and a pop-up will appear with an exhibitor’s name. (Please note: Not all exhibitors that were confirmed for Comic-Con 2020 opted to participate in Comic-Con@Home 2020.)

If you want more information on an exhibitor or want to see what they are offering for Comic-Con@Home, click on the booth or table and a pop-up will appear on the left with a synopsis of their information. You can click on “View More Company Information” to go to the exhibitor’s full profile page. Here you’ll find the same short company description as well as a randomly selected set of three of the exhibitor’s featured items.

Be sure to visit our space at #1534!

When you visit our online booth, be sure to sign up for an ASIFA-Hollywood membership at Comic-Con@Home and receive a free copy of the animated films “Chico & Rita” and “A Cat in Paris,” and an ASIFA-Hollywood drawstring bag via mail!

Each membership provides access to animation screenings, industry events, and more!

Accessing Panels and Other Special Events Online

For those of you who want to some of San Diego Comic-Con’s other offerings, Comic-Con@Home 2020 will also feature over 350 separate panels spread out over all five days of the event. Here’s how it will work:

  1. You can peruse through the event schedule and read the panel descriptions to decide what you’d like to see.
  2. The majority of the panels will also be available after the July 22-26 dates; however, some panels may have a limited time period attached to them and may not be available after a certain date.
  3. Each panel will contain a link that, once clicked, will launch another page that has the panel video embedded in it. The video will be available on the date and time listed.
  4. When it’s available, simply push play and watch. It’s that simple!

Most panels will also be available on Comic-Con’s YouTube channel, so you will also be able to access them there too.
